We’re excited to present our interview series for Book Week Scotland 2024 featuring three incredible authors!
This audio interview series will explore liberatory futures and how genres such as speculative fiction can often be tools to imagining new, more generative futures in spite of our collective dark pasts and even darker presents.
Writers Zoe Lorimer, Arianne Maki and Chris Lau Manson will share their experience on addressing hope amidst darkness and injustice in our world. Kelly Kanayama and Nailah King hosting.

Guest speakers
Zoe Lorimer (she/her) is a Black-Scottish freelance writer and creative from Edinburgh. Passionate about social well-being and racially-marginalised communities, her work is informed by eight years of working in South Korea, Taiwan and Australia. Zoe’s writing has been published in Roots and Rebellion: Personal Stories of Resisting Racism and Reclaiming Identity and featured internationally by Black Ballad, Ketagalan Media and The News Lens.
Dredged from the bogs of Scotland and England, Arianne Maki is a mixed Indonesian-Japanese fabulist and facilitator. They build touchy-feely, multi-species worlds to explore various queer and diasporic dimensions in a realm that seeks to flatten. Their writing has been shortlisted for the SI Leeds Prize, the Future Worlds Prize, and Penguin’s WriteNow programme.

Chris Lau Manson is a mixed Scottish-Chinese artist and writer based near Glasgow. Originally from Hong Kong, Chris draws on his twin heritages to tell Speculative Fiction stories that explore how tradition can empower us, and how traditionalism can hold us back. He mainly works in comics, but also illustrates, and writes and performs in comedy theatre.
Nailah King is the Communications and Admin Manager for SBWN, and is a Canadian writer now living in Scotland. Her work has been published in Feels Zine, GUTS Magazine, The Humber Literary Review, This Magazine, Transition Magazine and Carousel Magazine.
Kelly Kanayama is a pop culture and comics critic, editor and tutor with a PhD in comics research. Born and raised in Hawaii but now living in Dundee, she has written for The Independent, Media Diversified, Bitch Media, and Nerdist, among others. She has also spoken on panels at comic conventions in New York, Glasgow, and London. Her poetry has been published in various print and online outlets including Lighthouse Literary Journal, Room Magazine, Ink Sweat & Tears, and Gists and Piths.
