Open Call for Online Workshop and Blog pitches!

COVID-19 has presented many challenges for arts organisations throughout Scotland. But it has also afforded new ways of thinking and engaging with creative communities. The Scottish BAME Writers Network has witnessed great success with our online programming. As such, we’re pleased to re-open our calls for our online blog series and digital workshops to continue on through the end of 2021.

SBWN – Blog Pitch 2021

Call for Online Workshop Pitches

Are you a writer who has always wanted to lead a writing workshop? Do you have ideas about certain writing topics that you think people could benefit from? Have you led writing workshops in the past? Or are you completely new to facilitating a workshop session?

Like other organisations, our programming is moving online for the foreseeable future. In order to continue providing workshops for writers of colour and a space for mentorship, we are launching this open call for workshop pitches.

The Basics

  • You will send a brief pitch (300 words maximum) for a 90-minute online workshop. This includes a 10-minute break.
    • In this pitch, please include 1) a description of the writing topic; 2) a simple outline of the possible workshop activities; and 3) why you are interested in this opportunity.
  • Workshops will be capped at 15 people (not including organisers).
  • You will be paid an artist fee of £175.
  • No previous facilitation experience is required.
    • Please make a note if you have not facilitated a workshop before. We are very interested in helping new facilitators gain experience!
      • If you have not led a workshop before, and your pitch is selected, we’ll provide you with a mentor. Your mentor will give you advice on your plan and provide extra support during the workshop.
    • If you have led workshops before, that’s great too!
  • SBWN will organise the workshop and advertise it. It will be open to all writers of colour with some connection to Scotland.

How to apply

Apply using this Google Form by the closing date (9th May 2021) if you are interested in leading a workshop between June and September 2021. Please only apply if you identify as a writer of colour based in Scotland (or normally based in Scotland outside of COVID-19). If for any reason you are unable to use the Google Form, send your pitch (300 words max) to ScotBAMEWriters@gmail.com

Call for Blog Pitches

The Scottish BAME Writers Network is looking for guest bloggers in order to maintain and develop a dynamic blog that shares experiences, thoughts, and musings about a writer’s life in Scotland.

Writers are invited to pitch a blog idea on any topic of their choosing. While all applicants must identify as writers of colour, there is absolutely no obligation to pitch ideas about race and diversity – although these topics are welcome! Each guest blogger will be asked to contribute one blog post.

This blog is part of our regular network programming and will continue for the duration of the year (until December 2021).

If you have been previously published on our blog, please wait 6 months since you were published before submitting to us again.

The Basics

  • You will send a brief pitch (100 words maximum) on what your blog post will be about
    • If you’re stuck, some ideas include: an informal book/film/music review, thoughts about a recent event you attended (online events included!), an opinion article, a reflection on your life as a writer, interviews, and so on.
  • If you have links to previous work online, send those (up to 3) along too!
  • You will be paid an artist fee of £135 for a blog post of at least 700 words.
  • The blog post will be posted on Scottish BAME Writers Network website
  • Blogs will be posted intermittently. Together, we’ll decide a publication date that works for you.
  • An editor will be provided.

Audio

  • Where writers are willing, we would like to post an audio recording of your blog on our SoundCloud to make your blog more accessible.
